A non-latching device like a momentary switch can be normally open (off) or normally closed (on) as a trigger to set off a sequence or change its progress.

A latching device like a NON-MOMENTARY toggle switch can be normally open (off) or closed (on). It can change how the sequence progresses or stop a sequence completely.
