LocoLink

LocoLink is third-party model railroad control software for NCE Power Cab and Power Pro systems. It adds a computer-based throttle, locomotive roster, turnout controls, a visual track plan, decoder programming tools, and optional layout automation. The NCE system still generates the DCC signal and powers the track; LocoLink does not replace the command station or booster.

Why LocoLink was developed

Digital model railroad control often grows into several separate jobs: driving locomotives, operating turnouts, editing a track plan, programming decoders, and managing automation. LocoLink was developed to place those jobs in one clear, modern workflow that remains approachable for a first computer-controlled layout but can expand as a layout becomes more complex. It works with the existing NCE system rather than changing or replacing it.

What is needed

For the direct NCE connection described here, use a Windows or Mac computer with the correct NCE computer interface:

1. NCE Power Cab: use the appropriate NCE USB interface.
2. NCE Power Pro: use the command station's serial connection. If the computer has no serial port, use a compatible serial-to-USB adapter.
3. Windows: Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
4. Mac: macOS 14.6 or later.
5. Computer port: the interface driver must be installed when the computer requires one, and the interface must appear as an available local port.

Important: A phone or tablet does not plug directly into the NCE USB or serial interface. The direct connection ends at the Windows or Mac computer.

Basic setup

1. Make sure the NCE system operates normally from its cab before adding computer control.
2. Connect the NCE USB or serial interface according to the NCE instructions. Confirm that the computer recognizes the interface and its local port.
3. Open LocoLink, select the matching NCE system and choose the correct port.
4. Test with one locomotive at low speed. Check emergency stop, forward and reverse, and one decoder function.
5. Add turnouts, the track plan, feedback, routes or automation only after basic locomotive control is working reliably.

What LocoLink can control

LocoLink can place the commonly used layout controls on one screen. Depending on the installed NCE hardware and accessories, this can include locomotive speed, direction and functions; turnouts and signals; a visual track plan; DCC configuration variable (CV) programming; feedback and blocks; routes, shuttle operation and automation.

Start with manual control and add one feature at a time. Always keep the layout clear during the first test and verify that the emergency stop works before normal operation.
