Speed Steps and Locomotive Speed Explained

The numbers next to the loco number on a Pro Cab or Power Cab display (1 thru 28) or (1 thru 126) are “speed steps” This is the total speed available from the locomotive divided up into individual numbers (speed steps) for control. You cannot get any more top speed from the locomotive by choosing one or the other. You can only take the total speed and divide it up into 28 steps or 126 steps. You can choose between either control method using the 28/128 button on the bottom row of your keypad. Many factors, including the motor, drivetrain, gear ratios, manufacturing design, and track voltage, determine the maximum available speed.

The standard DCC track voltage for HO Scale is 13.8 /14v DCC, measured as AC on the rails.
